MRI scans in Gloucestershire and South Wales

Cobalt's unique diagnostic centre offers MRI clinical scanning at a variety of magnetic strengths (measured in Teslas). The centre currently utilises the UK's first high field Open MRI scanner and 3.0 Tesla MRI scanner. It also has a fleet of 1.5 Tesla Mobile MRI scanners and Europe's first 3.0 Tesla Mobile MRI. All of Cobalt's scanners receive software and hardware upgrades regularly to incorporate new technologies.

Cobalt's high field open MRI scanner offers increased comfort for those patients who suffer from claustrophobia or may need more room and their 3T Achieva offers superb image quality with finer and higher resolution at high speed.

Cobalt also operates a local MRI service in South Wales, working at the Institute of Chiropractic, based at the University of Glamorgan.

PET/CT scans in Gloucestershire and South Wales

Cobalt provides patients with a modern, clean, safe, and comfortable environment while their flexible, efficient, and responsive approach affords you a level of service clinicians can depend upon. The centre provides the very latest technology combined with the expertise of highly trained and experienced medical and radiographic staff. The centre helps to train many doctors for other NHS Trusts.

The centre also houses a Philips Gemini open PET/CT scanner. This is the world’s first open positron emission tomography and computed tomography scanner which provides quiet, fast imaging with the highest quality and resolution. The open scanner allows for a more pleasant scanning experience, especially for those who suffer from claustrophobia. The centre has had a large degree of success in scanning claustrophobic patients (referred to them nationally) that have been unable to complete their scans on other systems.

The scans are reported by The centre's team of experienced radiologists led by Consultant Radiologist Professor Iain Lyburn who has many years PET/CT experience.

Accreditation for diagnostic imaging

The Cobalt Unit Appeal Fund (Cobalt) has become the first imaging service to be accredited to the ISAS Standard by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

The ISAS Standard was jointly developed by The College of Radiographers (CoR) and The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) to award to organisations delivering patient-focused imaging services to their community using competent staff and in a safe environment.

To achieve accredited status, Cobalt volunteered to be independently scrutinised by a team of peers and lay representatives trained by UKAS. During this process they were able to demonstrate conformity to the rigorous standards set by the CoR and RCR.

Lord Jamie Lindsay, UKAS Chairman, said: "UKAS is delighted to announce that Cobalt’s is the first UK imaging service to be granted this internationally recognised accreditation. By participating in accreditation, Cobalt has not only shown its willingness to be open and transparent but also that it is constantly working to develop and improve both clinical and patient-related outcomes."
