The Private Healthcare UK guide to cosmetic surgery contains articles on cosmetic and plastic surgery which are aimed at improving your knowledge of cosmetic surgery treatments, their benefits and potential risks. This article looks at the side effects and potential risks of eyelid surgery.
Complications due to eyelid surgery are quite rare and usually only minor. Most people are not affected. Your vision will not be permanently impacted by a blepharoplasty although you may experience blurred sight for a couple of days after the operation. It is only the skin, fat, and some muscles around the eyes that are involved, not the mechanics of sight.
Side Effects
Following the surgery you may feel as if your eyes are sticky, dry, or itchy. Your eyelids might feel tight and sore. There may also be a temporary loss of sensation around the eyes or on the eyelid skin.
Slight Risk
Displacement of the lower eyelid can occasionally happen in blepharoplasty but it is very rare. This is when the lower eyelid is pulled down due to skin tension, but can usually be corrected with some simple exercises. In extreme cases further surgery is needed to correct the problem. Eyes can sometimes appear sunken if too much fatty tissue is removed.
Other problems associated with any operation include haematoma, pronounced scarring (keloid scars), prolonged swelling, infection, or an adverse reaction to the anaesthetic, although these are unlikely to occur.
Tiny whiteheads may appear after your stitches are taken out. Your surgeon can remove them easily with a very fine needle.
There is a slight risk of acute glaucoma, which would require treatment by a qualified optometrist.
In rare cases, eyes may not appear symmetrical after a blepharoplasty operation.
Ask your surgeon for more eyelid surgery information if you have any further questions.
